Founding of the GEFO, Society for Oil Shipments

Theodor Weisser on the founding of GEFO:
“GEFO is the solution to our transport problems on the Rhine. It has become more and more difficult lately for Marquard & Bahls to charter shipping space to transport our products. I attribute this change to our having bought oil from the Eastern Bloc for the past year. We've had many shipping companies cancel their contracts, often on the grounds that their customers do not wish to charter ships in which Eastern Bloc goods are transported. We therefore had to transport much of the oil by tank truck. This was expensive and inconvenient. Profits could barely be made doing such business so an alternative had to be found fast. This led to the idea of setting up our own transport company. In future it will guarantee us shipping space and thus secure our transport on the Rhine.”
