The First Merchant Trading Deal: ‘MS Kleopatra’

As the occupying powers refuse to grant Marquard & Bahls a licence to transport heavy heating oil from France to Finland, it looks like the company would miss out on a great opportunity. But then came a stroke of brilliance: import the consignment at Brunsbüttel, transport it via the Kiel Canal to Kiel-Holtenau, export it to Finland from there – and a transit permit would not be necessary. Import/export licences are readily available from the occupying powers. It isn't even necessary to unload and reload the MS Kleopatra.
